Lançado em 1974 para suceder ao Beetle, o Volkswagen Golf tornou-se a vara de medida do segmento C. O Golf nasce em Wolfsburg em 1974 como aposta urgente da VW para substituir o icónico mas envelhecido Beetle. Giorgetto Giugiaro desenha um hatch de duas caixas que cria um segmento. Os Mk1 e Mk2 estabelecem a fórmula GTI. O Mk3 e Mk4 trazem refinamento mas perdem foco dinâmico. O Mk5 (2003) restaura a credibilidade e o Mk6 polii-o.
